The cold
Yesterday I listened to a beautiful piece that conveys the sound of cold. The sound of this music penetrates, slowly, without ever stopping, all space, and every body that dwells within it. When the first colonists came to Québec, they feared the long winter, and they did not know how to survive here. In fact, few people wanted to come and live here because they heard gruesome tales about the life conditions during the cold season. What has evolved over the years is a sense of excitement and joy while nature sleeps. And yes, it is getting colder by the day. Some snow announced for tomorrow. And I wonder: Will it last? Will I be able to take a walk on my snow shoes? Today, I will put on my boots, and enjoy the feeling of walking with warm feet and a nose that is getting colder with each step I take.

Read & learn
I have always been a bookworm, since age five. And I have never stopped reading for pleasure. Books are worlds to plunge into, to explore realities different from mine. This week I read two novels that could be used in ESL classrooms, but they are so inspiring that I want to share them on my blog. The first one, funnily enough, made me feel like a grandma. Flower power people coming of age, and the teenage generation today gets what there is to get about anti-consumerism. The second book is a science fiction that could be taken as a remake of some kind of George Orwell`s “1984”. What if all suffering ended? What if no one would have to experience negative emotions anymore? What would the world be like? Interestingly, this story has an open end. There could be a second volume coming out –who knows?

“Get lost and find yourself!”
The master gave us this instruction with an enthusiastic smile. I felt puzzled. My intention for this tai chi workshop had been to learn something – some “thing”. And now I am told to “get lost”. What am I to do? As I got up this morning, many years later, it dawns on me that this instruction was not meant as an invitation to action. It could have been meant as an invitation to transformation. As I think back, it could have been a request to discover emptiness. The beauty of tai chi is the experience of “letting go”. As I let go, something opens up, and a little bubble of “emptiness” appears. Learning, as I understand it, is about creating these little bubbles first, and then be ready to fill them with “something” that is available at that moment. This makes Transformation possible: the form changes while the content stays the same. I am grateful for this lesson that took me some time to “get”.

Every once in a while I read the newspaper and find good ideas. For example, that entrance to Danish public museums is free of charge. What a great way to provide education, access to art and history, for everyone! I like the idea of visiting these places often and not always with the intention to “see as much as possible”. In fact, I sometimes go to a museum just for a few minutes, to look at one painting, to sit down a little, to let my mind wander. In my opinion, museums are great places to muse in. And musing occurs to me as highly productive. Certain ideas can emerge better when my agitation, this “background noise” of daily tasks, comes to rest for a while. I look at a painting, and I try to image what I see. Sometimes I just drop on the next chair after a few minutes and recreate on paper what emerged. And more often than not, these “imaginings” where just what I needed to continue with my tasks.

Cree prophecy
The knowledge is not new. Neither did it need high-tech to discover. The probable most likely future of our planet at present is that the atmosphere will heat up. In fact, it is heating up faster every decade. It is fascinating to watch, if I take this detached attitude, to see us, including myself, turn away from this urgent situation and leave it for “some day soon, not now”. It is absolutely depressing to read “the facts” about it. Between the lines of these texts I notice a lot of emotions, mostly desperation. This problem is not for “countries” or “governments” to solve. It is the task of each and every human being alive now. Our governments are representing us, they are not “some institution out there”. Yet, most of us have been conditioned to think “I cannot make a difference. I am just one.” L and I talk about this, and, I admit, these conversations take place because L shoves the books to my face and insists that we read this. Yesterday, he went one step further: He requested that I share a question, that I write this text. My point of view when I take a look at our world is more often than not that of a pedagogue. My problem seems to be not that I cannot understand the facts. They are clear enough and explained and illustrated by people who know their stuff. The problem seems to be that these facts are such bad news that no one wants to take them in. In my opinion it boils down to: How do I deliver the worst news ever – and win the listeners over – not only to listen, but to take action as individuals. As people. We need a new pedagogy paradigm to achieve this, because the kind of action required implies fundamental changes of our lifestyle, seeing ourselves first and foremost as children of this Earth instead of citizens of a country, and (this might be the hardest) as connected to every other human on this planet.

Non scholae, sed vitae discimus
C’est la rentrée lundi. Enfin, on recommence.

L. me sourit et me dit « »Bon, on l’a vu. On peut retourner à la maison. »

Strawberry Fields – forever!
Das Konzert begann um halb zehn. Gut zwei Stunden – 36 Songs.

200 000 musical chairs
We are done; actually we were done before everyone else really got started. I suspect it has to do with summer – in winter, with more than five meters of snow on the ground, everybody stays put. But on July 1st a lot of people – 200 000 this year – move house. If you rent a home, an apartment, a room, the contract takes effect on July 1st and ends on June 30, one year later. Our house-moving was a record for me, regarding the distance between the old and the new place. We moved three meters vertically and about ten meters horizontally. Still, everything was packed, sorted, moved, unpacked, and resorted. Missing so far: one book, unfortunately one belonging to the library, and our paper towels. No big deal. I am rediscovering the kitchen, which H. and A. had organized for me. So we are in the same building, but with a different view and in a different space. Even the furniture is the same, although we never moved it... I will miss the fireplace. I welcome the new kitchen, complete with washer, dryer and dishwasher (modern time-saving comfort). I am looking forward to spectacular sunsets outside my window.

Jene Stadt

Was bleibt?

Happy people don’t need to have fun
A friend recently surprised me with this pun-like citation of Jean Stafford. A sentence I first smiled about. But then an old habit kicked in: I looked up the words just to be sure I understood the joke – if there was one. And once again, it was worth the trouble. “Happy” is derived from “hap”, meaning one’s luck (good or bad?) and also “an occurrence, a happening, or accident”. So the true meaning of “being happy” could once well have been: someone to whom something is happening. “Fun”, on the contrary, means “something that provides mirth or amusement”. So the citation could be interpreted as: As long as something is happening to me, as long as I am able to get present to what is happening, there is no need for amusement. What a liberating insight! Be with what is happening, and I shall not need to look for something else. Thank you, Jean Stafford, for this wonderful insight!

(Jean Royer)

La Guardiana del Fuego

Dear John,
I am joining today. I can imagine all the people sharing all the world. In fact, I can imagine all the people sharing their ideas, their thoughts, their creations, their uniqueness.

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the peopleliving for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isn’t hard to do,Nothing to kill or die for,
And No religion too,
Imagine all the peopleliving life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one.

Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope someday you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

Le sage Jean Lesage
(1912 – 1980), Premier Ministre (1960 – 1966)

No tienen tiempo.

It’s over. Two terms – 9 courses – some results in terms of marks, and lots of knowledge accumulated in my head, acquired basically in two languages and snugly stored away, hopefully to be available for future projects. I know that I know a lot of stuff now that I did not know before. Nothing to get excited about, but useful (I hope) for what I want to create in the future. But I can never know it all. Nobody can these days. Humankind just knows too much. So – what now? I will be taking some time over the next few months to learn what life is all about, to find out how life works for us humans. That is different from studying. Studying is about books. Learning is about people, about sharing experiences and about listening to whomever I happen to meet. I started this Saturday by doing time. In the former prison next door, now integrated into the Musée National de Beaux Arts du Québec. More precisely, I started exploring what is possible for me in the following months. What do I want to accomplish? What do I want to create? Which space do I want to explore? It is amazing how, as soon as one project is accomplished, new tasks show up, or old ones pop out of my Outlook, some with the remark ”x weeks overdue”. Overdue – says who? I am not going to overdo it. I am living one day at a time, never afraid to get stuck in the “idle” mode. Like in the movie I saw last night. I prefer ideal days. And I want to learn something new, every day.

Intrus bienvenus

O sea, todavía no veo.

Vikings and Travel(l)ing Words
I might call myself a modern Nomad, in the sense that I feel at home in several regions on this globe without feeling the necessity to remain at a specific place. I like to explore what is unknown to me. This curiosity has existed in humans for a very long time. An article in the National Geographic this month opens with the statement: “Much of the thrill of venturing to the far side of the world rests on the romance of difference.” This, to me, sounded too much like tourism. And it made me think – and listen to: “tourist” – “voyager” – “traveler”... What do these words mean? Where do they come from? I turned to one of my best friends, the Petit Robert. This is what it came up with:
“Tourist” is an international word, known to speakers of several languages. It made its appearance in French in 1841 and was adopted from English. It means “to pass through to amuse oneself”. It is interesting to note that in French it is associated with the word “tourner” with means “circular movement around one’s own axis”. That made me think that maybe, when I am a tourist, I am somewhat self-centered and take a look at what is around me, without changing my point of view.
“Voyager” is also a word that one can find in French and English dictionaries. It was introduced into French in 1400 and means “Change of place, regarding a person who goes to a rather distant place”. It the same reference, Ulysses is mentioned as an example of a voyager.
Now, the word “traveler” had made me especially curious. I had picked up a new acquisition from the library because of its title “The Far-Traveler”. It simply appealed to me to combine and emphasize “traveler” with “far”. And as I thought about traveler, traveling, I remembered that one can also spell it “travelling”. Now, pronouncing the word the French way, it did not make any sense at first. There was something missing... I replaced the weak “e” with another vowel, an “a”, and looked for another letter that would fit. I concluded that “travailler” (to work) should have something to do with it. And sure enough, the words are related! The Merriam-Webster mentions that “travelling” comes from Anglo-French “travailler”. And the Petit Robert states that “travailler” means “to torture with the tripalium, a Roman torture instrument. So now, when I think of the word “Far-Traveler”, I can include the idea that there is some pain and suffering involved in this activity. The person in the book “The Far-Traveler” was called Gudrid, a Viking woman who had come to Vinland in North America a thousand years ago, who returned to Norway and who, later in life, set out again to Rome. Her memory is kept alive in the Icelandic Sagas. The woman’s feat inspires me to continue my voyage, to keep on travelling, in several senses of the word...

Metalenguaje

Mon cœur me demande quel langage il va parler
Devant ces étrangers
Étrangers dans un pays étrange… »
(Mariette Koro)

Lyra Silvertongue
When I am writing these days, it is more about language acquisition and teaching methods than this beautiful city and my experience of living in it. But then again, keeping my nose in the books and exploring certain shelves of the library is part of the experience. Pleasure reading is pure luxury – and luxury is essential if one is determined to enjoy life. In pursuit of a treat I discovered Lyra Silvertongue and her world, created by Philip Pullman. What intrigued me about Lyra’s world is the concept of “daemons”. These representations of the soul take the shape of animals. The interesting thing is that children’s daemons frequently change their form, whereas adult’s never do. Lyra is an adventurer, a wanderer between worlds on a breathtaking quest. I am inspired by the courage of this fictitious character, willing to take on anyone and anything for her cause – evidently, the good one according to the story.

What’s History?

I remember when I was about eleven years old one day I asked the librarian for a book about a place called Dachau. She looked at her colleague, then she looked at me, and took me to a section of the town library where I had not been before. I do not remember which book she gave me that day. It was one of a number of testimonies about what my people had done to other people during a time when I had not been born. Yet, I knew that I was part of these events, and I needed to know how people of my family and people of my town had participated, how much they had known at the time and how much they knew. In tenth grade this period of history was dealt with in school, and I suppose around that time I was told “You shall never forget.” I learned the facts, and I learned to feel guilty about what had happened. Years later a friend invited me to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. That day, I understood that this memory is best kept alive in the context of responsibility, free of guilt.
I am now beginning to discover the history of the people of my new environment. Every license plate in town tells me “I remember”. Remember what? I started to read, to visit museums, and I am beginning to discover the past, as well as how this particular past and its interpretation impact the society here. It is a history of conquest, of uprising, of a quiet revolution. For me, part of my integration into this society depends on how I can relate to this past, and which interpretation I can come up with.

Namen erinnern

Grau in grau. Der schöne Schnee – von gestern. Dafür vielerorts Überschwemmung. Was tun?
Happyness – Happiness
Part of the fascination that movies hold for me is the message they convey in pictures, text and music. A good movie to me is a story well told, and although I regret that it only lasts 90 minutes – most of the time – it has dimensions that a book has not. Images – composed by a group of people – and the pleasure is even greater when I have the good fortune to live almost next door to a good (not too big, not completely hollywoodized) movie theatre. It has only 90 seats! How they continue to exist? I suppose partly because they also rent movies… and they are open 24/7.
Last fall I saw two movies about happiness which made me think about this concept. In “Pursuit of Happiness” Will Smith goes after it, working hard, overcoming all kinds of obstacles, until …the happy end. There was nothing more to say. Was he happy once he found happiness? I can only hope so. The other movie was “Emmas Glück” (Emma’s Bliss), where the happy event occurs within 15 minutes of the opening scene. The message is another one: You cannot hold on to happiness – might as well enjoy it while it lasts.

nouveau - new - neu - nuevo

Voilà une nouvelle année qui commence!

Ein neues Jahr beginnt!

This is the beginning of a new year!

What were we celebrating? Being together, our community, the 400th birthyear of this beautiful city. Live music, artistic fireworks.
